Oscar King IV is a writer and high school English teacher living and working in the Bay Area, CA.

About

I have always been drawn to global stories of resistance, wonder in the mundane, and persistence in the face of injustice. This same draw has stayed with me through my over seven years of teaching experience, and it remains a fundamental part of my work, which has been published in magazines (Palo Alto Weekly, Mosaic Art & Literary Journal, and SFWC 2024 Writing Contest Anthology) and presented at large conferences (Anime Expo, 2017).

I am actively seeking agent representation for my current project – Veilweaver – which is the product of eight years of research, writing, and revising.

Subjects

I have won educator awards (Charles B. Emerick Teaching Prize (2022), Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation Educator of Distinction (2023), Morehead-Cain Impact Educator (2024)) and taught/co-taught both secondary and post-secondary courses such as:

  • Rhetorical Arts: Speaking and Writing for Social Justice;

  • Ancient Epics;

  • Multiracial Voices;

  • Asian Martial Arts Movies;

  • East Asian Pop Culture: Anime, K-Pop, Kung-Fu;

  • Fairy Tales: Re-Inventing the Spinning Wheel;

  • Signs of the Times: Semiotics & Cultural Capital;

  • Novella Workshop;

  • Contemporary Global Literature

Something Extra

I’m always futzing with something on the side, whether collaborating with my wife on our TikTok or scouting new films to teach.

Presently, I am thrilled to have helped my high school students publish a collection of their art, poetry, and short fiction. It is titled Liminal Spaces, and I couldn’t be prouder of them.
